When your fridge owns you

(although it used to be the other way around)

[July 2020] We are moving into a newly build house. I am so excited! Among all the modern facilities it also has that hole in the kitchen wall for the IoT fridge. In case you were living on another planet during the last 5 years, IoT means “Internet of Things”, it is the new “thing” where all appliances are connected to the Internet and they do smart stuff!

[August 2020] We bought it: our new IoT fridge. Some guy from the store came and installed it for us. He also explained how it works: the fridge can sense what it has inside through some technology called NFC and in 1-2 months it learns our habits and it can then order things for us, through the Internet. In no time the delivery guy from the supermarket comes to our home and puts the things inside our fridge throug the delivery gate (this is how the hole in the wall is called). The order is sent with a one-time password the delivery guy uses to open the delivery gate to put the things we (well, actually the fridge) ordered inside. It also has some sensors to prevent anything getting out of the fridge through that gate. It looks very secure to me.

Unfortunately our internet connection is not yet up, and it won’t be up until next week. The guy from the store told us that the fridge will only start learning our habits once it is connected to the Internet. He showed me how to connect the fridge to the internet once our connection is up, it looks pretty simple.

[October 2020] This is so exciting! Today the fridge talked to me! It said: “Hello Master! I first would like to thank you for bringing me into your wonderful home. I would also like to thank you for your patience while I learned your habits. I am now confident enough on my knowledge to tell you that tomorrow you will run out of milk. Will you allow me to order milk for you?”

Well, I have one secret to share with you: it was about time! My patience run out few weeks ago. And I deliberately bought no milk. But finally, the moment arrived.

I had to give the number of my credit card to the fridge, he said he will handle the payments for us as well. It was easy, as expected. Interestingly, I (or better said “the fridge”) had 2 choices: to order the food directly from the supermarket or to order it through Zamzing, the company that manufactured the fridge. Ordering through Zamzing entitles us to 1% discount, so it was pretty easy to choose. Running this new house is more expensive than we thought, so any penny saved is a good save.

[January 2021] The fridge has learned our eating habits pretty well, now it has enough confidence to order everything for us. And we are all happy, we do not need to decide what to buy each time we go to the supermarket. In fact we never go to the supermarket anymore, so we have more time to watch TV. The fridge asks us in the morning what we want to eat in the evening and it will buy the ingredients for us. The words to describe this: “I love magic!”

[April 2021] Good news: our fridge announced us today that it has replaced the milk we used to buy with another milk. He asked us if we liked the new milk. I did not notice, but the kids like the new milk, it is a bit sweeter. It is also 10 cents cheaper, which is the part I like.

[February 2022] Life is unfair, sometimes: we all have developed some allergy to some types of fruits and vegetables. Not sure why, maybe from all the pesticides used nowadays. The fridge offered to stop ordering them.

[April 2022] Some weeks ago the fridge recommended some medicines for our allergy. He told us that he can order this medicine just like any other food, there is no need for prescription. We are all taking this medicine every day now, and we started to feel better. Sometimes I wonder how did he know about the medicine and about the allergies in the first place.

[May 2022] We are not going on holiday this year, it’s too expensive. We realised last night that we do not have enough money. We have not told the kids yet. Neither of us wanted to tell them, we had to flip a coin to decide who tells them. I lost, I now have to figure out a way. Too bad the fridge cannot help here.

I do not have a clear picture, but I guess the medicines we have to take are too expensive. But at least the food is cheap.
